Offical Course Review: Lake Spivey Golf Club Review

Lake Spivey Golf Club Review

by John Kim

Introduction: Built in 1963 as an 18 hole layout, Lake Spivey has long been a stalwart of golf for serious Atlanta Golfers. Over the last 40 years, the course has undergone several facelifts and renovations, most notably ? the addition of an added nine hole layout. The course now boasts three separate nines; Lakeside, Hillside, and the newest (built in 1986) Clubside. The course was also the first in the nation to use Crenshaw Bentgrass for the greens, installing them in 1991. Accordingly, the staff takes great pride in the conditioning of the course, and it shows. The course also boasts the only nine hole layout I know of in the city that plays to a par 37 (the Lakeside nine).

Setting up your round: The 27 hole layout makes for getting around the course much easier than other places. It?s rare to even have a 4.5 hour round if you are keeping up a decent pace yourself. My group played in less than 4, and there were 4 of us, and we weren?t hurrying. Pace of play is rarely a problem here. It?s also much easier to get to than you think. Yes, it?s on the southside, but it?s only a few miles from the Interstate. I have a feeling this will be a regular stop on our rotation from here on out. Call the pro shop at (770) 477 9836 for more details and to set up your round. You can also book your tee time online at www.LakeSpivey.net

When you arrive: The course has a range, a putting green, a practice bunker, a grill room, etc. The fully stocked pro shop will prep you for your round as well. And, just as important as anything else, Lake Spivey has some of the friendliest personnel on staff as any I?ve encountered in my travels. A starter will help you get started, pointing you out to the first tee (depending on what nine you are playing first) and giving you some key local advice on some of the holes.

Favorite hole: Lakeside #1 is a fun par 5 that can be reached in two if you hit two accurate shots. I don?t know if the course approves, but from the blue tees, you can even cut off some distance by going to the right of the small lakes that line the right side of the fairway. I?m not sure I?d try it from the tips. But I played this hole twice, and birdied it twice, two different ways. It?s a scorer friendly hole and a good way to start this side.

Least favorite: Hole #9 on the Lakeside is a long, tough par 4 that can wreck a pretty good score in a hurry. Trouble lines this long hole all the way down the right, and the green is well below the fairway, with trouble on all sides. Even if you find the green, the big slope from back to front will make putting tough. There are some big numbers waiting for some of you as you close out this nine.

Overview: Over the last two or three years, this course has improved over 100%. Before, the fairways were a bit patchy and the aesthetics of the course were lacking as a whole. With some extensive renovations, it is now a very playable and still challenging layout. You probably won?t be overwhelmed, "spectacular" is not a word that comes to mind as I remember any of the holes. But fair, demanding, and thoroughly enjoyable are applicable. Additionally, I guarantee you Lake Spivey, for either daily fee play or for membership queries, is one of the best values in the city. I can?t wait to get back.
